Workshops in Zimbabwe stone sculpting for adults and children, beginners or confirmed sculptors.

Alexander Chitungo is an up and coming stone sculptor in Zimbabwe, which itself means 'Great house of stone'.

Sculpting stone is part of Zimbabwean culture, and Alexander, like the other sculptors, uses his art to portray the important values of the society in which he lives, the importance of the family, the rituals of everyday life, the spirituality that inhabits him.

His work is both figurative and abstract. Alexander, after numerous and very successful workshops in the USA and in Germany, will be back at the Villa des Courtissous from July 12th to August 9th 2010 to run stone-sculpting workshops with stone all the way from Zimbabwe.

You can choose your piece of opalstone for about 20 to 30 euros depending on the size of the stone, then you begin to sculpt your stone under the watchful, attentive and helpful eye of Alexander, who thinks that you will probably need about 12 to 15 hours to finish your piece, depending on your past experience in sculpting.

The workshops will be open most days (you arrange your own timetable with Alexander)

Cost: 10 euros an hour (minimum of 6 hours to be paid at the beginning of your first workshop).

P.S. If you need accommodation, Villa des Courtissous has rooms available in both the holiday cottage and the main house.
